To Be or Not To Be?

We don't even ask ourselves this question anymore. We are a culture addicted to the tasks before us...the more the better...especially if we can do multiple ones at once. This is coming from a man who a few years back tried to look up a phone number on my PDA in order to make a call on my cell phone while driving over some beautiful mountains...at night. I finally had to pull over. 2 hands are great...I'm not complaining...but I could do so much more with 2 more!

I've been reading/thinking a lot lately about the very core of my identity. Also been reading a lot lately on the Jewish/Christian observation of the "Sabbath"...a day of rest. The Sabbath is simply a time to be. If the Judeo-Christian God, who created the entire earth by speaking it into existence in 6 days, took the final day to rest, how much more do finite beings like myself need to observe/practice the Sabbath. And this goes way beyond the idea of physical renewal...because I doubt an all-powerful God gets fatigue. There is something more...something deeper to our need for a Sabbath...a time where we are reminded we are more than the sum of what we do and what we say. The Sabbath is a time to remember who we are and in that fact, we find rest & renewal for our souls. I'm off for a mini-Sabbath. Blessings!

So do you think the sabbath should be on Sunday? Or is the sabbath whenever you get a chance to relax? Are we still under the law? What about a year of jubilee?

Sabbath is a day you take out of your week...any day...it doesn't matter. The point is to reboot, reconnect, recenter, renew, recreate, relax, etc.

Under the law? In the words of Paul, "by no means"!

A year of jubilee? I think that would be fun to experience but under our present economy, it would never happen...perhaps on a personal level, though...hmmm...

Yeah thats a good idea...personal years of jubilee. Canceling debts that others have built up with you. Andy Stanley's new book, "It Came From Within" gives some good insight on debts, debtors, and our anger!
